ISA u9 Football Tournament
On Wednesday 18th September, with a mixed Year3/4 football squad, Westward travelled to Sidcup for the ISA U9 Football tournament.
A glorious, sunny afternoon welcomed the team to Sidcup and we found that we were in group 4 with Whitehouse School and Benedict House.
Our first match was against Whitehouse School and we started off a little nervously, finding ourselves one nil down quite quickly. Once we got into our stride we began to compete much better and soon equalised through Jasper. Jessica was super in defence, showing great commitment, tackling well and being in good positions, whilst Anaay, Austin, Charlie and Ben showed good skills in midfield. Despite both teams best efforts the game finished 1-1.
Our next opponents were Benedict House, who came with a strong team. We defended with heart, Tobi making some good, strong defensive tackles alongside Jessica, with Anaay in goal for this match- making some truly super saves. Unfortunately, they were a little too strong and ultimately we lost by four.
This meant that we drew on points with Whitehouse and needed to play off for the final group positions. Having played them before, we knew what we had to do, and proceeded to do it well! Jasper added to his tally with a good run through on the keeper before putting it past him. His second goal of the match was one for the scrapbook: a free kick on the halfway line was awarded and Jasper lined it up and shot powerfully-scoring direct! Wow!
This meant that we finished second in the group and, as a result, would play off against the second team in group three, for our final match.
On the same pitch as before, this time we faced West Lodge, the hosts, and were confident of doing well. It was a tight affair, with Westward going ahead through an Anaay strike, but immediately coming under pressure from a useful West Lodge side. In the end, we defended well enough and had some good forays into their half, ultimately holding on for our second win of the day!
A good time was had by all and credit goes to everyone for their commitment, behaviour and skill. Congratulations to the Year 3’s playing in their first tournament, to Jasper for his three goals and special mention to Jessica for her superb defending. We look forward to more matches over the course of the term and beyond.
